When it is exceeded, certain wages, social benefits and pensions in Belgium are automatically adjusted to the rising cost of living. The Belgian indexation mechanism then kicks in, so that incomes rise to partly offset <strong>inflation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of the pivot index is to protect households\u2019 and employees\u2019 <strong>purchasing power<\/strong> as far as possible. Through automatic indexation, consumers keep more financial room to pay daily expenses, invoices and other obligations. The pivot index therefore plays an important role in household financial stability and can help prevent <strong>payment arrears<\/strong> and <strong>debt<\/strong> during periods of rising prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The definitions in this section reflect the Belgian situation, unless otherwise stated.
