Incomes then do not keep up with the cost of living, so consumers\u2019 <strong>purchasing power<\/strong> falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An index skip often has a direct impact on household finances. When wages and benefits lag behind rising living costs, families have less budget left for invoices, credit, energy and housing. This can lead to more <a href=\"https:\/\/tcm.be\/en\/glossarium-en\/payment-arrears\/\">payment arrears<\/a>, debt and financial problems. An index skip is therefore often seen as a measure that can strengthen companies\u2019 competitive position, while at the same time putting consumers\u2019 purchasing power under pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The definitions in this section reflect the Belgian situation, unless otherwise stated.
