In the trailer of the first \u2018Wa Make\u2019 movie, you can hear the now iconic (at least in Limburg) Benjamin Tonon shouting: ‘Yo, blockhead, where\u2019s that cash?!’<\/strong> To many, that doesn’t just sound like a scene from the Limburg underworld, but also like a caricature of how they \u2014 unfairly \u2014 perceive the debt collection sector.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real impact starts with giving people opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

TCM Belgium decided to get behind the long-awaited second movie from the Limburg collective \u2018Wa Make\u2019. Because real impact only happens when people are given opportunities<\/strong> \u2014 whether it involves creative talent in the film world or people facing payment difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mostly young team behind the film is driven by ambition, something we as a company can only applaud. Content-wise, the film also touches on themes we are confronted with daily as a debt collection partner: breaking down prejudices, shifting perceptions, and giving people a second \u2014 or even a third \u2014 chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wa Make?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two young Limburgers approach our table at the C-mine site with a steady stride, strikingly dressed in white: director Luca Salvatore and lead actor Jef Vananroye. Ziya Yilmaz, the other half of the directing duo, unfortunately couldn’t make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the watchful eye of the headframes, and while slurping steaming pasta served with great warmth by the owner of the Italian restaurant Norma, we listen to their story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From corruption to emotion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The films tell the story of a corrupt police officer (played by Jef) struggling with financial problems. While the first film laid the foundation, this new movie goes a step further. Luca: ‘Not only are taboo subjects like police corruption and racism addressed, but emotions are also given more room in this second film.’ <\/em>The title soon proved to be the perfect fit. Luca: ‘It\u2019s a film by Limburgers, for Flanders. “Wa Make” is a typical Limburg expression that can mean almost anything \u2014 from “how\u2019s it going?” to “what on earth are you doing now?”, often with a wink’<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collecting on Set<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To say that filmmaking costs blood, sweat, and tears is an understatement. And you really have to be able to take a hit (pun intended!). Jef: ‘The first movie was made on a shoestring budget. We didn’t have an action director. During one action scene, I took no fewer than 46 real punches to the face before the directors were satisfied.’<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That hard work isn’t limited to acting alone, by the way. We spot a tattoo of a musical note on Jef\u2019s wrist, and there\u2019s a story behind it. Jef: ‘Besides acting, I have another passion: making music.’<\/em> He also contributed to the soundtrack of this new film. Feel free to look up ‘Voldaan’ by Chaz X Jef on Spotify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
