Rome I Regulation

Glossary

The Rome I Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 593/2008) determines the national law applicable to international contractual obligations within the EU. It applies to all EU Member States (with certain exceptions such as Denmark) and has universal effect, meaning it designates the applicable law whether that law belongs to an EU state or a non‑EU country. Courts in EU Member States must apply the Rome I rules when assessing which national law governs a cross‑border contract.
